1. What is the Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology?
The Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology supports the advancement of knowledge and international understanding by linking the current generation of leaders in science and technology from around the world and using that network to address issues of critical concern. We actively promote the work done by Fulbright Scholars so that others can benefit from our expertise.

Our mission is to capitalize on the largely untapped resource of 250,000 Fulbrighters globally to advance education, research, policy and commerce in science and technology.

A few specific areas of focus for FAST include:

  • Stimulating an interest in science and technology in students and the general public;
  • Fostering scientific literacy;
  • Facilitating international communication and understanding of science and technology across various disciplines; and
  • Developing partnerships with Fulbrighters and other organizations in the USA and abroad to accomplish the above goals in the spirit of William Fulbright and the Fulbright Exchange Program.

FAST was started by alumni of the Fulbright Exchange Program.  FAST is a global non-profit organization that fills a particular niche -- a body that brings the knowledge and expertise of Fulbrighters to bear on some critical problems of global concern, such as poverty alleviation, primary and secondary education, health, and environmental sustainability.

2. Does the Fulbright Academy support scientific research or offer grants?
FAST does not award grants for research or travel.  FAST supports research through its programs, and money raised by FAST is used to build bridges among alumni and members through its programs.

For example, FAST may offer reduced participation fees for certain groups of individuals who participate in our annual conference, but these are not “Fulbright Scholarships.”  We also partner with individuals who are seeking funds from other sources.

3. Who can join the Fulbright Academy?
There are several different groups of members:

  • Current grantees and alumni of the Fulbright Exchange Program. These are individuals who have gone through a rigorous international selection process and have been identified as individuals who are worthy of being involved in the Fulbright Program. Because of this, FAST deems them to be worthy to be members of the Academy.
  • Hosts of visiting Fulbright scholars.  As with the first group, these are individuals whose involvement in the exchange program has been reviewed and approved as part of the Fulbright selection process, and so we welcome their participation and involvement in our organization.
  • Friends and colleagues, including individuals who have participated in other international exchange programs.  Science is not a lonely profession, but rather one that grows through collaborations.  This group includes important research partners, current and former students and other individuals who one day may be a Fulbright scholar themselves.
  • Institutions. These are entities located anywhere in the world that train or employ Fulbright scholars or that support the work of the Academy. It includes academic institutions, government agencies, businesses, non-profit organizations, and foundations.

4. How is the Fulbright Academy related to other Fulbright entities?
The Fulbright Program has a complex structure administered by the US State Department, 51 independent Fulbright Commissions, and several program management organizations. Direct financial and in-kind support comes from 64 national governments and thousands of private entities and individuals provide financial and in-kind support toward the exchanges.  The exchanges are operated under the supervision of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, whose 12 members are appointed by the President of the United States. Around the world, there are more than 70 national Fulbright alumni organizations and close to 100 sub-national alumni chapters.

The Fulbright Academy has relationships with volunteers and staff at many of the institutions, but is not directly affiliated with the Scholarship Board, US State Department, or any of the national alumni associations.

5. How can I learn more about your programs?
This website has information about programs in two places.  First, you can look at some of our projects and programs by clicking on the Programs link.  You can also read about projects, forums and other activies in our newsletter.  You can easily subscribe to our electronic newsletter and we will keep you informed about future developments.

6. How do I get involved?
The Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology has members and supporters who are involved in many aspects of our work.  Some serve on boards and committees; others collaborate with us and other members on research proejcts.  The best way to get started is to send us a note and tell us about your background and your interests:  info@FulbrightAcademy.org
