Registration Opens - Panama

Dr. Anil Mandal of Florida was the first person to register for our Annual Conference, which will be on March 1-4, 2007. Dr. Mandal is a consultant nephrologist with hospitals in northeast Florida and is also affiliated with the medical schools at the University of Florida in Jacksonville and the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada. He will be presenting research on diabetes.

As an incentive to register early, we have reserved special gifts for the first 25 Fulbrighters to register. As with our other programs, the conference is open to alumni, hosts of Fulbrighters, and interested members of the public.

The 2007 Conference includes field trips, seminars and opportunities for Fulbright scholars, alumni and leaders in science and society to present their research and discuss their work. Opening speakers include Sir Harold Kroto (Nobel Prize in Chemistry) and Federico Humbert (Panama’s Ambassador to the United States).

The conference addresses topics relating to economic development, education, medicine, and environmental sustainability. The framework of the UN Millennium Development Goals, eight broad goals adopted by the United Nations designed to galvanize international development efforts. On Thursday, we will have workshops on criminology and marine conservation.

We expect 250-300 participants: scientists, researchers, government officials, teachers, students, and friends. Please recall that “science” includes social science and related disciplines, such as political science, psychology, public administration, business management, law etc. Also note that the conference is in Panama City, Panama, not the vacation desitination for college students: Panama City, Florida.

In conjunction with the conference, FAST is publishing a collection of essays - reflections on Fulbright exchanges between the United States and Latin America. We are currently seeking authors from all disciplines to write essays. Information available at www.fubright-LA.com.

Registration for the four-day program $400, with discounts for members and lower income individuals. Registration covers workshops, tours, and most meals. Hotel accommodation is less than $100/night, and a room-sharing service is available.
