The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has dozens of connections with the Fulbright Program. Last month, they hosted a program to celebrate scientfic research conducted by faculty, staff and students. Among others, it recognized 17 projects, each funded at more than $3 million by outside entities. Research areas include redox biology, behavior & reading, rice proteins, drought, antarctic ice cores, math in middle school, nanotechnology, hemophilia, neurotoxins, and virology. The university also directs the International Sorghum/Millet Cooperative Research Support Program - a $37 million, 10-year program funded by US AID.

Summer interns here to help you

Several current Fulbright grantees to the United States will be interns at the Fulbright Academy this summer. Their activities will help us better serve our individual and institutional members by strengthening our networks and by participating in specific Study Committees.

After several rounds of telephone interviews, Freya Baetens was selected from a strong pool, which included candidates from Ohio, Texas, Florida, and New York. All of the candidates were given complimentary memberships in the Academy.

Ms. Baetens of Belgium earned a Master of Law degree from Ghent University in 2005. As part of her Fulbright in the US, she has been an intern at the United Nations in New York, conducting research on global development and peacekeeping issues. Her project for the Academy relates to the Academy's relationship with other international organizations.

She is joining two other Fulbrighters who already are involved in FAST programs. Rafael Lanfranco of Peru interviewed participants at our conference in Berlin for a documentary DVD that he is making for the Academy. He has been a grantee at Boston University, which provided equipment for him to use.

We also have been working with Zeeshan Usmani, a grantee from Pakistan at Florida Institute of Technology. He has edited a book of stories written by international Fulbright grantees in the United States (www.FulbrightBook.com), and so he will be involved in our Fulbright stories project.

The internship program was designed as a way for the Academy to strengthen relationships with grantees and alumni. Due to a lack of funds, it was not possible to offer positions to all of the interested candidates. Internships are sponsored by grants or donations from individuals, corporations, and other entities, and if you would like to make a donation or sponsor an intern, please call the Academy at 207-799-3098.

Fulbright Film Festival

The Fulbright Academy is pleased to announce our newest initiative: “The Fulbright Film Festival.” Dozens of Fulbrighters have made films and documentaries that describe topics in political science, natural science, medicine, and society.

We have started a collection of these documentaries, and we hope to have a Film Festival this fall. The Film Festival will feature cinematic works by Fulbrighters past and present, including documentaries about their experiences abroad.

In addition to providing a forum for Fulbrighters to share their work, the Festival will be a chance to highlight cultural and political issues of international importance. Showings will be followed by question-and-answer sessions and then a chance to meet new friends and re-connect with colleagues. Please e-mail us if you would like to get involved or know of a film we should show.

Sign Up for Study Committees

The Academy currently has three Study Committees. These are initiatives funded by outside partners, and they bring together Fulbright scholars and other experts to address specific topics.

1. Committee on Digital Archives; seed funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. This project is addressing access to and distribution of electronic information.

2. Committee on Science Literacy; seed funding through a NSF contract to Indiana University. This will be a multi-year initiative, and we are starting with a small project that focuses on public perceptions of bacteria.

3. Committee on Clinical Research Ethics; seed funding from the American Board of Healthcare Law & Medicine. This bioethics project compares national and international codes and standards for conducting research on human subjects.

If you would like to be involved in any of our Study Committees, please send an email to info@FulbrightAcademy.org.

Fulbright Alumni Activities Around the World

Unable to attend our first annual conference in Berlin this past March? For those of you who missed the presentations, you have not missed your chance to learn from your fellow Fulbrighters! Many of the powerpoint presentations can be seen on our website at www.FulbrightAcademy.org. Just look under “Programs” and then “Annual Conference: March” to learn more about the research your fellow Fulbrighters are involved in.

The Fulbright Alumni Association in Morocco is hosting a two-part international Fulbright meeting in Marrakech on November 3-7, 2006. The program focuses on Fulbrighters in the arts, and is organized by the Moroccan Association and the U.S. Fulbright Association. Please go to www.fulbright-alumni.ma for details

The US-Peru Fulbright Commission organized a seminar on Free Trade on March 22 as part of a series of events to mark the 50th anniversary of the Fulbright program in Peru. Ambassador Struble opened the Free Trade seminar, attended by 50 Peruvian Fulbright alumni and current US Fulbrighters in country, reminding the Fulbrighters that now, more than ever, they are needed as "interpreters" to build mutual understanding between peoples. US Fulbrighter Jeremy Weber presented his research on 'fair trade' coffee production in San Martin province (most of which is exported to the US), and AmCham Deputy Director Manuel Quindimil and Embassy Econ Counselor (and Fulbright Board Member) Tim Stater highlighted US and Peruvian views on the Peru Trade Promotion Agreement.

Fulbright Alumni in Botswana have successfully launched the Botswana-US Alumni Association. A workshop held in February identified the association's objectives and elected a steering committee. Ambassador Katherine Canavan officially welcomed participants, who also heard from Visiting Chief of Fulbright Africa Programs Dr. Ellen Berelson. The event attracted fifty participants, including veteran Botswana politician Mr. Ponatshego Kedikilwe (Syracuse University, 1969). A member of the Swazi-American Alumni Fellowship Association, Mr. Stanfrey Khumalo, added a regional dimension to the discussions.
