Greetings!
This is the June 2004 issue of the Fulbright Academy of Science &
Technology's news bulletin. Our publication is sent to educational
innovators and leaders in scientific and technical fields in the US and
around the world. Please look to the end of this email for information
about the Academy and its mission. We can be reached at info@fulbrighter.org
The Fulbright Academy is an independent non-profit organization based
in the United States. We receive support from selected Fulbright alumni
groups, businesses, institutions, organizations, foundations, and
individuals interested in developing an international network of leaders
in science and technology. We are not affiliated with the (US) Fulbright
Association, the US State Department or the Board of Foreign Scholars.
We look forward to your involvement in the Academy.

Upcoming Programs and Events |
 |
| Fulbright alumni and friends from around the
world will be gathering in October in Athens, Greece for the
Fulbright International Interdisciplinary Conference. For the first
time in 27 years, the Fulbright Association (US) will hold its
annual conference abroad - its meeting is on October 7-8. The
Hellenic Association's conference will follow, on October 8-10. The
meetings will be held at the Royal Olympic Hotel in downtown Athens.
For more information, contact the US Association at 202-347-5543 or
visit the conference website.
The Fulbright Academy is organizing a small reception in early
September in Cambridge, Massachusetts to honor Harvard University,
local Fulbrighters, and hosts of Fulbrighters. For years, Harvard
has been the leading institution worldwide for hosting Fulbrighters.
Each year 30-40 academic scholars are there to lecture or do
collaborate research at the Harvard and its graduate schools and
affiliated institutions. Please call the Academy at 207-799-3098 for
the exact date and location.
The Fulbright Academy is also organizing a meeting in conjunction
with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
2005 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC on February 17-21. We had a
successful presence at their meeting in Seattle earlier this year,
and the 2005 program should be even more exciting because of the
expected interaction with the many agencies, research institutions,
scientific societies, and non-profit groups in the Washington area.

Fulbrighter Involvement in International
Adoptions |
 |
| Nina Scribanu, MD joined the Department
of Pediatrics faculty of Georgetown University Medical Center in
1972. Over the years, Dr. Scribanu became active in promoting
professional exchanges and technical assistance to medical schools,
hospitals, and orphanages in Romania, Russia and other former
Eastern block countries.
Dr, Scribanu specializes in developmental/behavioral pediatrics
and genetics. She serves as the director of the International
Adoptions Health Resource Center (IAHRC), a program at the
Georgetown University Child Development Center which she founded in
1990.
One of Dr. Scribanu's goals is to educate prospective parents,
health professionals and the general public about the developmental
and health issues associated with international adoptions. "These
children are at risk for a variety of conditions, including fetal
alcohol syndrome, malnutrition and psychological and physical
abuse," Dr. Scribanu explained. "Many of these children have
significant behavioral problems and learning disabilities." The
first order of priority is to identify the medical issues that
require immediate attention, such as immunizations, rickets,
parasitic infestations and congenital anomalies.
To smooth out the adoption process, the IAHRC offers a full range
of services from pre-adoption counseling and guidance for parents to
post-adoption interdisciplinary evaluation and management of adopted
children. |

Educational Tools Available On-line |
 |
| We continue to be amazed by the amount of
resources available over the internet to support educational
programs in math and science. With each issue of our newsletter we
will provide links to selected sites that we find particularly
interesting or fun.
Here are this month's selections:
- NASA Astrobiology
Institute, which examines questions such as how does life
begin and evolve and is there life elsewhere in the Universe?
- Invention at
Play is managed by the Smithsonian's National Museum of
American History. It profiles inventors of products such as
Sailboards, Microwaves, and Kevlar, and it also has some games.
- Whizzball,
a fun game that shows basic physics to kids by using movable
shoots and ramps to get a ball from start to finish.
Please share your interesting websites. Send us an email at info@fulbrighter.org

 |
| There is typically a year delay between when
someone applys for a Fulbright Scholarship and when the awardee
actually goes abroad. The next deadline for applying for the
traditional Fulbright lecturing, lecturing/research and research
awards worldwide is Monday, August 2, 2004, for travel in 2005.
These grants are administered by the Council for International
Exchange of Scholars (CIES).
There are numerous criteria which may be considered in
determining if a professional is awarded a Fulbright. *
Professional Qualifications, such as training, academic rank and
position, reputation as a scholar or professional, and quality of
professional accomplishments. * Match of academic, professional
or artistic expertise to the award, including evidence of host
institution interest and affiliation * Merits of the proposal,
including research design and methodology, feasibility, significance
to the interests and needs of the host country, and need for

Selected New Members |
 |
| Dr. Sarosh Khan, associate professor of
civil engineering at the University of Colorado at Denver,
specializing in transportation engineering. Khan used her Fulbright
in 2002 to conduct research on vehicular emission for mixed traffic
in South Asia during a sabbatical in India, Bangladesh and Sri
Lanka.
Dr. Karl Reinhard specializes in archaeoparasitology at
the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. He had a Fulbright to Brazil in
2001 for research and lecturing on evolutionary perspective on
parasitic diseases. In July 2000, he found a 10,000 year old louce
egg on human hairs at a site in northeast Brazil - the oldest
evidence of lice found to date. Lice apparently hitched a ride to
the New World on the heads of its very first colonists, adapting to
the changing conditions and perhaps evolving into new strains as
people dispersed.
Dr. Sara Schweitzer is an associate professor at the D.B.
Warnell School of Forest Resources at the University of Georgia. In
2002, she had a Fulbright to Sofia University, where she lectured
and conducted research on conservation and management of wildlife
populations in Bulgaria.
Dr. Jesus Martinez-Frias is the head of the Planetary
Geology Laboratory at the Centro de Astrobiología (CSIC-INTA) in
Madrid, Spain. This spring he was appointed Chair of the NASA
Astrobiology Institute Mars Focus Group. (see separate story in this
newsletter).
Dr. Paula Mitchell is associate professor in the biology
department at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. Her research
interest is insect-plant interactions, in particular, integrated
pest management (IPM) of coreid and pentatomid bugs on vegetables
and pulse crops. She is Secretary of the Behavior & Ecology
subsection, Entomological Society of America and Secretary of the
International Heteropterists' Society. She had a Fulbright in 2001
to the National Center for IPM in New
Delhi.
