  • Meet FAST at the AAAS Meeting
  • Academy Membership

  • Welcome to the February 2004 issue of the Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology's news bulletin. We have a very short issue this month because efforts were dedicated to (1) the AAAS meeting (see below) and a major upgrade to the website.

This publication is sent to educational innovators and leaders in scientific and technical fields in the US and around the world. Please look to the end of this email for information about the Academy and its mission. We can be reached at info@fulbrighter.org

We have been producing this newsletter for nearly one year, so long-term readers know that the Academy is an independent non-profit overseen by a dedicated group of volunteers. We receive support from selected Fulbright alumni groups, businesses, institutions, organizations, foundations, and individuals interested in developing a network of leaders in science and technology, and we are not affiliated with the Fulbright Association, the US State Department or the Board of Foreign Scholars. We hope you will become a member of the Academy.

Meet FAST at the AAAS Meeting

A winter meeting of members was held a few weeks ago at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). With over 140,000 members, AAAS is an important leader within the scientific community and in Washington, DC, where the organization is strongly advocating for federal scientific funding and improved science education.

Thousands of scientists, eduators and journalists attended the 5-day meeting. With over 140 symposiaand special events, there was something for scientists of all types. Fulbrighters in attendence included Jim Leshner (CEO of the AAAS), Jim Harper (Director of the Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation), Proctor Reid (Staff at the National Academy of Engineering), Assad Panah (Director of the Environmental Studies Program at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford), and Eric Howard and Robert George (FAST Board Members). We also met three science journalists who had been overseas as Fulbrighters. The Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), which manages the professional and scholar exchanges, had a booth at the meeting, as did several German exchange programs.

    Academy Membership
The Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology uses the expertise of our network of Fulbrighters and leaders in science to address criticial problems in education, scientific innovation and economic development. While projects may be funded by foundations who share our mission, membership income is an important part of our annual budget.

Membership renewal notices were sent to all members the first week of February. If you are not yet a member, please consider joining the Academy.
